Role:EnsemblePeriod:RomanticGenre:VocalThe Eastman Chamber Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1968 by Raymond Gniewek, a violinist and professor at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. The ensemble is made up of faculty members and graduate students from the Eastman School of Music, and has become known for its high level of musicianship and innovative programming. The ensemble's founding members included Raymond Gniewek on violin, John Graham on viola, and James VanDemark on cello. Over the years, the ensemble has had a rotating cast of members, but has always maintained a core group of musicians who have been with the ensemble for many years. One of the highlights of the Eastman Chamber Ensemble's early years was a performance at the White House in 1971, during the Nixon administration. The ensemble was invited to perform for a state dinner in honor of the President of Pakistan, and played a program of classical music that included works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. In the years since, the Eastman Chamber Ensemble has continued to perform at major venues and festivals around the world. They have been featured at the Aspen Music Festival, the Tanglewood Music Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York City, among others. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was a concert at Carnegie Hall in 1998, which was part of a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Eastman School of Music. The program included works by Mozart, Brahms, and Dvorak, and was praised by critics for its "exquisite musicianship" and "impeccable ensemble playing." The Eastman Chamber Ensemble has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1986, they were awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that have demonstrated a commitment to performing new and innovative works. They have also been awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming multiple times, most recently in 2019. In addition to their performances and awards, the Eastman Chamber Ensemble has also been involved in a number of educational initiatives over the years. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for students at the Eastman School of Music and other institutions, and have also worked with young musicians through programs like the National Orchestral Institute and the New York State Summer School of the Arts. Overall, the Eastman Chamber Ensemble has established itself as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the world. With a commitment to innovative programming and impeccable musicianship, they have delighted audiences and inspired young musicians for over 50 years.More....
