Wilson's first major performance as a conductor was with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1950. He received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. This performance launched Wilson's career as a conductor, and he went on to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a conductor, Wilson was also a prolific composer. He wrote music for orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments.
