Genre:ChamberErika Duke-Kirkpatrick is a renowned cellist and contemporary music performer, known for her virtuosic playing and dedication to new music. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1953, Duke-Kirkpatrick began her musical studies at a young age, studying piano and cello. She attended the University of Southern California, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. After completing her undergraduate studies, Duke-Kirkpatrick continued her education at the California Institute of the Arts, where she studied with cellist Eleanore Schoenfeld. It was during this time that Duke-Kirkpatrick began to develop her interest in contemporary music, and she became involved in the school's new music ensemble. In the years that followed, Duke-Kirkpatrick established herself as a leading performer of contemporary music, working with some of the most important composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. She has premiered works by John Adams, John Cage, Terry Riley, and many others, and has collaborated with a wide range of ensembles and performers. One of Duke-Kirkpatrick's most notable collaborations was with the Kronos Quartet, with whom she performed and recorded extensively in the 1980s and 1990s. She also worked closely with composer Morton Feldman, performing his works both in the United States and abroad. In addition to her work as a performer, Duke-Kirkpatrick has also been active as an educator. She has taught at the California Institute of the Arts, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California, among other institutions. Throughout her career, Duke-Kirkpatrick has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to contemporary music. In 1990, she was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance for her work with the Kronos Quartet on the album "Black Angels." She has also been recognized with awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Fromm Music Foundation, among others.
