Joel Thome is a renowned American conductor, composer, and arranger who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on August 22, 1951, in New York City, Thome grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer, which inspired him to pursue a career in music. Thome began his musical education at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied composition and conducting. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School, where he earned a Master of Music degree in composition. During his time at Juilliard, Thome studied with some of the most prominent composers of the time, including Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, and Roger Sessions. After completing his studies, Thome began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras and ensembles. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative programming and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. In 1980, he founded the New York Chamber Symphony, which quickly became one of the most respected ensembles in the country. Throughout his career, Thome has collaborated with some of the most prominent musicians of the time, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. He has also worked with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Thome's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the rock band, The Who. In 1989, he was asked to arrange and conduct the orchestral parts for the band's rock opera, Tommy. The resulting performance, which took place at Radio City Music Hall, was a huge success and helped to bring classical music to a new audience. Today, Thome continues to be an active conductor, composer, and arranger. He is currently the music director of the Queens Symphony Orchestra and the artistic director of the New York Chamber Symphony. He also serves as a guest conductor for orchestras around the world and continues to write new works for various ensembles.
