Artist Info
Period:ModernGenre:OperaMargarita Miglau was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 15, 1925, in Riga, Latvia. She was the daughter of a well-known Latvian composer, Jāzeps Vītols, who was also a professor at the Latvian Academy of Music. Miglau grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a young age. She showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Miglau's talent for music was evident from an early age, and she quickly became a prodigy. She received her first public performance at the age of nine, and by the time she was 12, she had already won several awards for her piano playing. Her father recognized her talent and began to train her rigorously. She studied under her father and other renowned pianists, including Heinrich Neuhaus and Emil Gilels. In 1944, Miglau and her family were forced to flee Latvia due to the Soviet occupation. They settled in Germany, where Miglau continued her music education. She studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich and later at the Conservatoire de Paris. She also attended masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Artur Schnabel and Rudolf Serkin. Miglau's career as a concert pianist began in the 1950s. She made her debut in Paris in 1952 and quickly gained recognition for her virtuosity and musicality. She performed extensively throughout Europe, the United States, and Asia, playing with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Miglau was known for her interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann. She was particularly admired for her performances of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which she played with great sensitivity and depth. Her recordings of these works are still considered some of the best interpretations of Beethoven's music. Miglau was also a prolific recording artist. She recorded extensively for the Deutsche Grammophon label, and her recordings of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann are still highly regarded. She was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for her recording of Chopin's complete works for piano. Miglau was the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1965, she was awarded the Order of the Three Stars, one of Latvia's highest honors. She was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Order of the Legion of Honor by the French government. Miglau continued to perform and record well into her later years. She gave her last concert in 1995, at the age of 70. She passed away on December 28, 2008, at the age of 83. Margarita Miglau was a true artist who dedicated her life to music. Her virtuosity, musicality, and sensitivity made her one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Her recordings and performances continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.More....
