Semperconsort is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1995 in Dresden, Germany. The ensemble is known for its exceptional performances of early music, particularly from the Baroque period. The group has gained a reputation for its innovative interpretations of works by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, and Antonio Vivaldi. The founding members of Semperconsort were all graduates of the Dresden Conservatory of Music. The group was initially formed as a chamber music ensemble, with a focus on performing works for small groups of instruments. The original members of the group were violinists Annette Unger and Jörg Schultze, violist Andreas Lorenz, cellist Michael Metzler, and harpsichordist Andreas Hecker. Over the years, the ensemble has undergone some changes in membership, but the core group has remained largely intact. Today, Semperconsort consists of Annette Unger and Jörg Schultze on violin, Andreas Lorenz on viola, Michael Metzler on cello, and Andreas Hecker on harpsichord. One of the highlights of Semperconsort's career was their performance at the 2000 Bachfest in Leipzig. The group was invited to perform a program of works by Bach, including his Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and his Violin Concerto in A minor. The performance was met with critical acclaim, and helped to establish Semperconsort as one of the premier early music ensembles in Germany. In addition to their performances of Baroque music, Semperconsort has also gained recognition for their interpretations of works by composers from the Renaissance period. The group has performed works by William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, and other composers from this era, and has been praised for their ability to capture the spirit of the music. Semperconsort has also been recognized for their recordings. The group has released several albums, including a recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos that was praised for its clarity and precision. The group's recording of Telemann's Tafelmusik was also well-received, and helped to establish Semperconsort as a leading interpreter of Telemann's music. In addition to their performances and recordings, Semperconsort has also been recognized with several awards. The group was awarded the Echo Klassik award in 2003 for their recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, and was nominated for the same award in 2006 for their recording of Telemann's Tafelmusik. The group has also been recognized with the Diapason d'Or award, which is given to outstanding classical music recordings. Semperconsort continues to perform and record today, and remains one of the most respected early music ensembles in Germany. The group's commitment to excellence and their innovative interpretations of early music have earned them a loyal following, and have helped to establish them as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the world.
