From a young age, Michel showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Michel's musical journey began when he enrolled in the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal at the age of ten. He studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Yvonne Hubert. Michel's talent and dedication to music were evident from the beginning, and he quickly became one of the most promising students at the conservatory. In 1983, Michel graduated from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal with a degree in piano performance. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Master of Music degree in piano performance. During his time at Juilliard, Michel studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Adele Marcus. Michel's career as a classical music artist began to take off in the late 1980s. He made his debut as a soloist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 1987, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a huge success, and Michel received critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing and musical interpretation. Over the years, Michel has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Leonard Bernstein, Sir Simon Rattle, and Daniel Barenboim. One of Michel's most memorable performances was his rendition of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1992.
