The Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra (TNSO) is a classical music ensemble based in Taipei, Taiwan. Founded in 1945, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent and respected orchestras in Asia. The TNSO was established shortly after the end of World War II, when Taiwan was under Japanese occupation. The orchestra was originally called the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and was led by Japanese conductor Hideo Saito. After Taiwan was returned to Chinese control in 1945, the orchestra was renamed the Taiwan Provincial Symphony Orchestra and was led by Chinese conductor Chao-Liang Shen. Over the years, the TNSO has had many notable conductors, including Maestro Henry Mazer, Maestro Lan Shui, and Maestro Jahja Ling. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang, and Itzhak Perlman. One of the highlights of the TNSO's history was its performance at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. The orchestra was invited to perform at the opening ceremony, where they played a piece composed by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. The performance was widely praised and helped to raise the profile of the TNSO on the international stage.
