He was born on August 23, 1953, in Frankfurt, Germany. Rampe grew up in a musical family, and his father was a church musician. He began playing the piano at a young age and later switched to the harpsichord, which became his primary instrument. Rampe studied musicology, philosophy, and German literature at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. He also studied harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. Leonhardt was a significant influence on Rampe's musical style and approach to performance. In 1978, Rampe founded the ensemble "Les Amis de Philippe," which specialized in performing Baroque music on period instruments. The ensemble quickly gained recognition for its innovative and historically informed performances. Rampe's expertise in Baroque music and his commitment to authenticity made him a sought-after performer and conductor. Rampe has performed at major music festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
