Michael Kranebitter was a renowned Austrian composer of classical music, born on August 22, 1957, in Innsbruck, Austria. He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Kranebitter grew up in a musical family, and his parents encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Kranebitter began his musical education at the Innsbruck Conservatory, where he studied piano and composition. He later went on to study at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, where he received his diploma in composition. During his time in Vienna, Kranebitter studied under renowned composers such as Friedrich Cerha and Erich Urbanner. Kranebitter's early works were heavily influenced by the Second Viennese School, particularly the music of Arnold Schoenberg. However, as he developed his own style, Kranebitter began to incorporate elements of traditional tonality into his compositions. His music is characterized by its complex harmonies, intricate rhythms, and use of unconventional instrumental techniques. One of Kranebitter's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1992 by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. The symphony is a large-scale work that showcases Kranebitter's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create complex musical structures. The piece is divided into four movements, each of which explores a different musical idea. The symphony has been praised for its innovative use of orchestral color and its ability to create a sense of drama and tension. Another significant work by Kranebitter is his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered in 1986 by the Arditti Quartet. The quartet is a challenging work that requires the performers to use a variety of extended techniques, such as playing behind the bridge and using harmonics. The piece is notable for its use of complex rhythms and its exploration of different timbres and textures. Kranebitter also composed a number of works for solo instruments, including his Piano Sonata No. 1, which was premiered in 1983 by the pianist Markus Schirmer. The sonata is a virtuosic work that showcases Kranebitter's ability to create intricate and challenging piano music. The piece is notable for its use of unconventional harmonies and its exploration of different pianistic techniques. In addition to his work as a composer, Kranebitter was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts from 1991 until his death in 2016. Many of his students went on to become successful composers in their own right. Kranebitter's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. His works have been praised for their originality, complexity, and emotional depth. Kranebitter died on December 28, 2016, at the age of 59. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but his legacy lives on through his music and the many students he inspired during his career.
