Born on May 12, 1985, in Toronto, Canada, Derek showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Derek's musical journey began with his enrollment in the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where he studied piano under the tutelage of renowned pianist, Dr. James Anagnoson. Derek's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly rose through the ranks, earning top marks in his exams and competitions. In 2003, Derek was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music, recognizing his outstanding achievements in piano performance. This award was a significant milestone in Derek's career and served as a testament to his talent and hard work. After completing his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Derek went on to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Toronto, where he continued to hone his skills as a pianist.
