Sir Derek Jacobi is a renowned British actor and director, known for his contributions to the world of classical music. Born on October 22, 1938, in Leytonstone, London, Jacobi grew up in a family that was passionate about music and the arts. His mother was a secretary and his father was a department store manager who also played the piano and sang in a choir. Jacobi's love for music began at an early age, and he started taking piano lessons when he was six years old. He also sang in his school choir and performed in school plays. However, it was not until he was a teenager that he discovered his true passion for classical music. After completing his education at Leyton County High School for Boys, Jacobi went on to study at the University of Cambridge, where he joined the Marlowe Society and acted in several plays. It was during this time that he also began to explore his interest in classical music and started attending concerts and operas. In 1960, Jacobi made his professional acting debut in the play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He went on to perform in several other plays, including "Hamlet," "Othello," and "The Tempest," and became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1965. Throughout his career, Jacobi has been a passionate advocate for classical music and has performed in several operas and concerts. In 1971, he made his operatic debut in Benjamin Britten's "The Turn of the Screw" at the Royal Opera House in London. He went on to perform in several other operas, including "Don Giovanni," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "The Magic Flute." In addition to his work in opera, Jacobi has also performed in several concerts and recitals. In 1982, he performed in a concert of Schubert's songs at the Wigmore Hall in London, which was later released as a recording. He has also performed in several concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Jacobi's contributions to classical music have been recognized with several awards and honors. In 1985, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to drama. In 1994, he was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his performance in "Breaking the Code." In 2001, he was awarded the Knight Bachelor for his services to drama. Despite his success in the world of classical music, Jacobi is perhaps best known for his work in film and television. He has appeared in several films, including "Gladiator," "The King's Speech," and "Murder on the Orient Express." He has also appeared in several television series, including "I, Claudius," "Cadfael," and "Last Tango in Halifax."
