Period:ModernEstela Olevsky was a renowned classical pianist born on August 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She was the daughter of Russian immigrants who had fled the Bolshevik Revolution. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist, so music was always a part of her life. Olevsky began playing the piano at the age of four and gave her first public performance at the age of six. Olevsky's talent was evident from a young age, and she was accepted into the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires at the age of nine. She studied with some of the most prominent pianists in Argentina, including Vicente Scaramuzza and Bruno Leonardo Gelber. Olevsky's talent continued to flourish, and she won several competitions, including the National Piano Competition in Argentina. In 1957, Olevsky moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. She studied with Rosina Lhévinne, a renowned piano teacher who had taught some of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, including Van Cliburn and John Browning. Olevsky's time at Juilliard was transformative, and she honed her skills as a pianist and musician. After graduating from Juilliard, Olevsky embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. She performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and South America, and she was known for her virtuosic playing and musical sensitivity. Olevsky was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the music of Chopin, Beethoven, and Schumann. Olevsky's career was marked by several notable performances and awards. In 1961, she won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which launched her career and led to performances with major orchestras throughout the United States. In 1964, she made her debut at Carnegie Hall, which was a major milestone in her career. She also performed at other prestigious venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Royal Festival Hall in London. Olevsky was also a dedicated teacher, and she taught at several institutions throughout her career, including the Manhattan School of Music and the University of Maryland. She was known for her passionate and insightful teaching style, and many of her students went on to successful careers as pianists. In addition to her performing and teaching career, Olevsky was also a prolific recording artist. She recorded several albums throughout her career, including a highly acclaimed recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes. Her recordings were praised for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. Olevsky's career was cut short by her untimely death in 2018 at the age of 81.
