Kitzman grew up in a family of musicians, and his parents were both professional musicians. His father was a trombonist, and his mother was a pianist. Kitzman was exposed to music from a young age and showed a keen interest in playing the trombone. Kitzman began his musical journey by playing the trombone in his school band. He quickly developed a passion for the instrument and started taking private lessons. He was a dedicated student and spent countless hours practicing and perfecting his craft. Kitzman's hard work paid off, and he soon became one of the top trombonists in his school. After completing high school, Kitzman went on to study music at the University of Michigan. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1980 and a Master of Music degree in 1982. During his time at the university, Kitzman studied under some of the most renowned trombonists in the world, including Frank Crisafulli and Glenn P. Smith. After completing his studies, Kitzman began his professional career as a trombonist. He joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1982 and quickly established himself as one of the top trombonists in the orchestra. Kitzman's talent and dedication to his craft did not go unnoticed, and he was soon offered a position with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Kitzman joined the Houston Symphony Orchestra in 1985 and remained with the orchestra for over 20 years. During his time with the orchestra, Kitzman performed in countless concerts and made numerous recordings. He also had the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned conductors in the world, including Christoph Eschenbach, Hans Graf, and Leonard Slatkin. In addition to his work with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Kitzman was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed with numerous ensembles, including the Summit Brass, the American Brass Quintet, and the Empire Brass. Kitzman's performances were always well-received, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the top trombonists in the world. Throughout his career, Kitzman has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 1995, he was awarded the International Trombone Association's Neill Humfeld Award for his outstanding contributions to the trombone community. He was also awarded the Houston Symphony Orchestra's Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones Principal Trombone Chair in 1997. In addition to his work as a performer, Kitzman is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world, including the University of Michigan, Rice University, and the Manhattan School of Music. Kitzman is known for his passion for teaching and his ability to inspire his students to reach their full potential. Today, Kitzman continues to perform and teach. He is a member of the faculty at the University of North Texas and is also a member of the Summit Brass.
