Clark Matthews was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Matthews showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Matthews received his formal music education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky. During his time at Juilliard, Matthews won numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 2006. After graduating from Juilliard, Matthews embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist, performing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He has also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Matthews is known for his virtuosic performances of the works of classical composers such as Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. He is particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt, which he has recorded extensively. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Matthews is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Many of his students have gone on to successful careers as concert pianists and music educators. Throughout his career, Matthews has received numerous awards and honors, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Gilmore Young Artist Award, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Michigan and the University of Southern California. Despite his many accomplishments, Matthews remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and teach, inspiring a new generation of musicians with his passion and dedication to classical music.
