Artist Info

La Chapelle Royale String Quartet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1990 in Paris, France. The quartet is known for its exceptional performances of classical and contemporary music, and has become one of the most respected ensembles in the world. The founding members of La Chapelle Royale String Quartet were violinists Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian and Régis Pasquier, violist Gérard Caussé, and cellist Philippe Muller. All four musicians were highly accomplished soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. The quartet's name, La Chapelle Royale, is a reference to the royal chapel of the Palace of Versailles, where many of the greatest composers of the Baroque era, including Jean-Baptiste Lully and Marc-Antoine Charpentier, worked and performed. The quartet's name reflects its commitment to performing music from this era, as well as music from other periods. Over the years, La Chapelle Royale String Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. The quartet has also collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and conductor Sir Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of La Chapelle Royale String Quartet's career was its performance of Beethoven's complete string quartets at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris in 2003. The quartet's interpretation of these works was widely praised for its depth, sensitivity, and technical virtuosity. In addition to its performances, La Chapelle Royale String Quartet has also received numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. The quartet's recording of Mozart's string quartets won the Grand Prix du Disque in 1995, and its recording of Schubert's string quartets won the Diapason d'Or in 2001. Despite its many achievements, La Chapelle Royale String Quartet has remained committed to its original mission of bringing the beauty and complexity of classical music to audiences around the world. The quartet continues to perform and record new works, and its members remain dedicated to their craft and to each other.
