Matthews' compositions were characterized by their intricate rhythms, complex harmonies, and virtuosic piano playing. One of Matthews' most famous compositions is his "Pastime Rag No. 3," which was published in 1913. The piece is a classic example of the ragtime style, with its syncopated rhythms and lively melody.
