Brett Baker is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of brass music. Born on 26th May 1967 in Bristol, England, Baker grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Roy Baker, was a professional trombonist, and his mother, Margaret Baker, was a piano teacher. Brett Baker started playing the trombone at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Baker's musical journey began when he joined the Bristol East Band at the age of eight. He quickly progressed through the ranks and became the principal trombonist of the band at the age of 12. Baker's talent was soon recognized, and he was invited to join the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain at the age of 14. He remained a member of the band for six years and was appointed as the principal trombonist at the age of 17. Baker's talent continued to flourish, and he won several awards and accolades during his teenage years. In 1984, he won the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year competition, which was a significant achievement for a young musician. He also won the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain with the Bristol East Band in 1985 and 1986. After completing his studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Baker joined the Black Dyke Band in 1990 as the principal trombonist. The Black Dyke Band is one of the most famous brass bands in the world, and Baker's appointment was a significant milestone in his career. He remained with the band for 18 years and played a crucial role in their success during this period. Baker's talent as a soloist was also recognized during his time with the Black Dyke Band. He won the British Open Solo Championship in 1992 and 1993 and the International Trombone Association Solo Competition in 1993. He also performed as a soloist with several orchestras, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra, and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. In 2008, Baker left the Black Dyke Band to pursue a solo career and to focus on his teaching and conducting work. He has since performed as a soloist with several orchestras and bands and has conducted workshops and masterclasses around the world. He has also released several solo albums, including "Baker's Dozen" and "Baker's Christmas Dozen," which have received critical acclaim. Baker's contribution to the world of brass music has been recognized with several awards and accolades. In 2010, he was awarded the International Trombone Association Award for his outstanding contribution to the trombone world. He was also awarded the British Trombone Society Award in 2012 and the Brass Band World Personality of the Year Award in 2013. Baker's talent as a musician and his dedication to the world of brass music have made him one of the most respected and admired musicians in the industry.
