The Phoenix Bach Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1958 by Dr. Millard Kinney, the choir has become one of the most respected and accomplished choral groups in the United States. Dr. Kinney, a music professor at Arizona State University, started the choir with a group of his students who shared his passion for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. The choir quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional performances of Bach's choral works, and soon expanded its repertoire to include other composers from the Baroque era and beyond. Over the years, the Phoenix Bach Choir has been led by several distinguished conductors, including Dr. Kinney, Dr. Harold Owen, and Dr. Charles Bruffy. Under their leadership, the choir has continued to grow in size and skill, attracting talented singers from across the country. One of the highlights of the Phoenix Bach Choir's history was its performance at the 1999 National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association. The choir was selected to perform as one of only six choirs from across the country, and its performance was widely praised for its precision, clarity, and emotional depth. In addition to its many performances in the United States, the Phoenix Bach Choir has also toured internationally, performing in Europe, Asia, and South America. These tours have helped to establish the choir's reputation as one of the finest choral ensembles in the world. The Phoenix Bach Choir has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2008, the choir was awarded the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence by Chorus America, a national organization that supports and promotes choral music in the United States. The award recognized the choir's outstanding contributions to the choral art form and its commitment to excellence in performance. In addition to its performances and awards, the Phoenix Bach Choir is also committed to music education and outreach. The choir regularly collaborates with local schools and community organizations to provide music education and performance opportunities for young people. Today, the Phoenix Bach Choir continues to be a leading force in the world of choral music. With its commitment to excellence, its dedication to the music of Bach and other great composers, and its passion for sharing the joy of music with audiences around the world, the choir is sure to remain a beloved and respected institution for many years to come.
