He was the son of a Jewish family, and his father was a well-known physician. Bergel showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He received his first formal music education at the Cluj Conservatory, where he studied piano and composition. In 1950, Bergel moved to Bucharest to continue his studies at the National University of Music. He studied piano with Florica Musicescu, a renowned Romanian pianist and teacher, and composition with Mihail Jora, a prominent Romanian composer. Bergel graduated with honors in 1955 and began his career as a pianist and conductor. Bergel's early career was marked by his success as a pianist. He won several national and international competitions, including the George Enescu International Piano Competition in Bucharest in 1956. He also performed as a soloist with many orchestras in Romania and other European countries. In the 1960s, Bergel began to focus more on conducting. He studied conducting with Sergiu Celibidache, a Romanian conductor and teacher, and became his assistant at the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany. Bergel also worked as a conductor at the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest and the Cluj-Napoca Philharmonic Orchestra. Bergel's international career as a conductor began in the 1970s. He conducted many orchestras in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted in the United States, Japan, and South America. Bergel was known for his interpretations of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Richard Wagner. He was also a champion of contemporary music and conducted many premieres of works by Romanian composers. One of Bergel's most significant achievements was his recording of the complete symphonies of Anton Bruckner with the Staatskapelle Dresden. The recordings, made in the 1980s, are considered some of the best interpretations of Bruckner's music. Bergel was also a respected teacher and taught conducting at the National University of Music in Bucharest. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as conductors. Bergel's career was not without controversy. He was a vocal critic of the Romanian Communist regime and was briefly imprisoned in 1958 for his political views. He was also accused of anti-Semitism by some members of the Romanian Jewish community, although he denied the accusations. Bergel retired from conducting in the 1990s due to health problems. He continued to teach and give masterclasses until his death on November 14, 1998, in Munich, Germany. Bergel received many awards and honors during his career, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Romanian Order of Cultural Merit.
