The Tampa Bay Master Chorale is a classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with their stunning performances for over 40 years. Founded in 1979 by Dr. Robert Summer, the chorale has grown to become one of the most respected and renowned choral groups in the United States. Dr. Summer, a professor of music at the University of South Florida, had a vision to create a choral group that would bring together the best singers in the Tampa Bay area to perform the great choral works of the past and present. He began by auditioning singers from local churches, schools, and community groups, and soon the Tampa Bay Master Chorale was born. The chorale's first performance was in December 1979, when they performed Handel's Messiah to a sold-out audience at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. The performance was a huge success, and the chorale quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and powerful performances. Over the years, the Tampa Bay Master Chorale has performed a wide range of choral works, from the great masterpieces of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven to contemporary works by living composers. They have collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists, including Sir David Willcocks, John Rutter, and Plácido Domingo. One of the highlights of the chorale's history was their performance of Verdi's Requiem in 1993. The performance, which was conducted by Dr. Summer, featured over 200 singers and musicians and was hailed as one of the greatest performances of the work ever heard in the United States. In addition to their performances, the Tampa Bay Master Chorale has also been recognized for their exceptional musicianship and contributions to the arts. They have received numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming and the Florida Cultural Alliance's Arts Recognition Award. The chorale has also been committed to supporting music education and outreach in the Tampa Bay area. They have worked with local schools and community groups to provide music education and performance opportunities for young people, and have also performed benefit concerts for local charities and organizations. Today, the Tampa Bay Master Chorale continues to inspire and delight audiences with their exceptional performances and commitment to the arts. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Brett Karlin, the chorale remains dedicated to bringing the best of choral music to the Tampa Bay area and beyond.
