Paul Ellison is a renowned double bassist and educator who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in 1942 in Los Angeles, California, Ellison grew up in a musical family and began playing the double bass at the age of 12. He studied with renowned bassists such as Stuart Sankey and Roger Scott, and later went on to study at the University of Southern California and the Juilliard School. Ellison's career as a professional musician began in the 1960s, when he joined the Houston Symphony Orchestra as principal bassist. He remained with the orchestra for 23 years, during which time he also served as a faculty member at the University of Houston. In 1986, Ellison left the Houston Symphony to join the faculty at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, where he has remained ever since. Throughout his career, Ellison has been a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and ensembles. He has also been a prolific recording artist, with numerous albums to his name. Some of his most notable performances include his solo debut with the Houston Symphony in 1967, his performance of the world premiere of Gunther Schuller's "Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra" with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1985, and his performance of the world premiere of John Harbison's "Double Bass Concerto" with the Houston Symphony in 1996. In addition to his performing career, Ellison has also been a dedicated educator. He has taught at the Shepherd School of Music since 1986, and has also served as a guest lecturer and masterclass instructor at numerous institutions around the world. He has been recognized for his contributions to music education with numerous awards, including the Texas Music Educators Association's Distinguished Service Award and the American String Teachers Association's Artist Teacher Award. Ellison's contributions to the world of classical music have been widely recognized and celebrated. In 2011, he was awarded the International Society of Bassists' Distinguished Achievement Award, which is the highest honor that the organization bestows. He has also been recognized with the Houston Symphony's Ima Hogg Award for Artistic Excellence and the University of Southern California's Outstanding Alumnus Award. Despite his many accomplishments, Ellison remains dedicated to his craft and to his students. He continues to perform and teach, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential bassists of his generation. His legacy as a performer, educator, and advocate for the double bass will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of musicians for years to come.
