Pat Harbison is a renowned American jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator. He was born on August 28, 1956, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a singer. Harbison started playing the trumpet at the age of nine and was soon performing in local bands. Harbison attended Indiana University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies in 1978. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas in 1980. During his time at Indiana University, Harbison studied with renowned jazz educators David Baker and Jerry Coker. After completing his studies, Harbison moved to New York City, where he quickly established himself as a sought-after jazz musician. He performed with a variety of jazz legends, including Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods, and Lionel Hampton. He also recorded with jazz greats such as Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, and Lee Konitz. In addition to his work as a performer, Harbison is also an accomplished composer. He has written music for a variety of ensembles, including big bands, small groups, and orchestras. His compositions are known for their intricate harmonies and sophisticated melodies. One of Harbison's most notable compositions is his 1995 album, "Pat Harbison Quintet: Remembering Bill Evans." The album features Harbison's arrangements of some of Evans' most famous compositions, including "Waltz for Debby" and "Very Early." The album received critical acclaim and helped to establish Harbison as a leading jazz composer. Harbison has also written music for film and television. He composed the score for the 1997 film "The Last Time I Committed Suicide," which starred Keanu Reeves and Adrien Brody. He has also written music for several television shows, including "The West Wing" and "ER." In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Harbison is also an accomplished educator. He has taught at several universities, including Indiana University, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Illinois. He is currently a professor of jazz studies at Indiana University. Harbison has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1999, he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Fellowship. He has also been recognized by the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation. Despite his many accomplishments, Harbison remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform, compose, and teach, and his contributions to the world of jazz have earned him a place among the genre's most respected musicians.
