Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1967 in Caracas, Venezuela. The ensemble is composed of students and alumni from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, one of the most prestigious universities in the country. The group is named after Simón Bolívar, the Venezuelan military and political leader who played a key role in the liberation of several South American countries from Spanish colonial rule. The founding of Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar was the result of the efforts of a group of music students who wanted to create a choir that would represent the university and the country in international competitions. The group was initially led by Alberto Grau, a renowned Venezuelan composer and conductor who had studied in Europe and had a deep knowledge of choral music. Grau served as the group's conductor for many years and was instrumental in shaping its sound and repertoire. Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar quickly gained a reputation as one of the best choirs in Venezuela and began to participate in national and international competitions. The group's first major success came in 1971, when it won the gold medal at the International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy. This was a significant achievement for a choir from a relatively small country like Venezuela, and it helped to establish Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar as a serious contender in the world of choral music. Over the years, Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar has performed in many prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. The group has also collaborated with many renowned conductors and orchestras, including Claudio Abbado, Gustavo Dudamel, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the highlights of Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar's career was its participation in the opening ceremony of the 1983 Pan American Games, which were held in Caracas. The group performed a specially commissioned piece by Alberto Grau, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. This performance helped to raise the profile of the choir and cemented its reputation as one of the best in the region. Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar has also been recognized with many awards and honors over the years. In addition to its gold medal at the International Choral Competition in Arezzo, the group has won numerous other international competitions, including the Florilège Vocal de Tours in France and the International Choral Competition in Tolosa, Spain. The group has also been awarded the National Prize for Culture in Venezuela, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed on an artist or cultural institution in the country. The members of Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar are all highly trained musicians who are passionate about choral music. The group is composed of around 60 singers, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. Many of the members go on to have successful careers in music, both as performers and educators. In recent years, Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar has continued to perform and record music, both in Venezuela and abroad. The group has released several albums, including a collection of Venezuelan folk songs and a recording of works by Alberto Grau.
