He was raised in a musical family, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Mandel began playing the trumpet at a young age and later learned to play the trombone and saxophone. Mandel's musical career began in the 1940s when he played in various big bands, including those led by Jimmy Dorsey and Count Basie. He also worked as an arranger for bands such as Woody Herman's and Artie Shaw's. In the 1950s, Mandel moved to Los Angeles and began working in the film and television industry. One of Mandel's early successes was his arrangement of "The Shadow of Your Smile" for the 1965 film "The Sandpiper." The song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and became a hit for Tony Bennett. Mandel went on to compose and arrange music for numerous films, including "I Want to Live!" (1958), "The Americanization of Emily" (1964), and "Caddyshack" (1980). Mandel was also known for his work in television, composing the theme songs for shows such as "M*A*S*H" and "The Love Boat." He won a Grammy Award for his arrangement of "The Theme from M*A*S*H (Suicide is Painless)" in 1981. In addition to his work in film and television, Mandel was a prolific composer of jazz and classical music. He wrote numerous jazz standards, including "Emily," "A Time for Love," and "Close Enough for Love." His classical compositions include a violin concerto and a suite for orchestra. Mandel's music was known for its lush harmonies and sophisticated arrangements. He often used unusual chord progressions and complex rhythms in his compositions. His music was also characterized by its emotional depth and sensitivity. Mandel continued to work in the music industry until his death on June 29, 2020, at the age of 94.
