Sequenza 9.3 is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in France. The group was founded in 1998 by Catherine Simonpietri, who serves as the artistic director and conductor. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming and performances that blend traditional classical music with contemporary and experimental styles. Catherine Simonpietri was born in France in 1963 and began studying music at a young age. She studied piano and music theory at the Conservatoire National de Région de Nice and later attended the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where she studied conducting with Manuel Rosenthal and Jean-Sébastien Béreau. After completing her studies, Simonpietri worked as a conductor and pianist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe. In 1998, she founded Sequenza 9.3 with the goal of creating a new type of classical music ensemble that would explore the boundaries of traditional classical music. The ensemble's name, Sequenza 9.3, is a reference to the solo works for various instruments composed by Italian composer Luciano Berio. Berio's Sequenza IXb for clarinet was a major influence on Simonpietri and the ensemble's approach to music-making. Sequenza 9.3's early performances were characterized by their eclectic programming, which included works by contemporary composers such as György Ligeti, Steve Reich, and John Adams, as well as more traditional classical works by composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. One of the ensemble's early highlights was a performance at the Festival d'Automne in Paris in 2000, where they performed a program of works by Berio, Ligeti, and others. The performance was well-received by critics and helped to establish Sequenza 9.3 as a leading ensemble in the contemporary classical music scene. In the years that followed, Sequenza 9.3 continued to perform at major festivals and venues throughout Europe, including the Berliner Festspiele, the Salzburg Festival, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was a 2010 concert at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, where they performed a program of works by Berio, Ligeti, and other composers. The concert was recorded and released as a live album, which received critical acclaim and helped to further raise the ensemble's profile. Sequenza 9.3 has also collaborated with a number of other artists and ensembles over the years, including the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Orchestre National de France, and the Quatuor Diotima. In addition to their performances, Sequenza 9.3 has also been recognized for their recordings. The ensemble has released several albums, including a recording of Berio's Sequenzas for solo instruments and a recording of works by composer Philippe Hersant. Sequenza 9.3 has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Diapason d'Or award for their recording of Berio's Sequenzas and the Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros for their recording of Hersant's music. Today, Sequenza 9.3 continues to push the boundaries of classical music with their innovative programming and performances. The ensemble remains a leading force in the contemporary classical music scene and continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike with their unique approach to music-making.
