He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known violinist. Rudolf showed an interest in music from a young age and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the cello, which became his primary instrument. Rudolf's talent was evident from an early age, and he began performing in public at the age of ten. He studied at the Prague Conservatory and later at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He also studied with some of the most prominent cellists of his time, including Mstislav Rostropovich and Pierre Fournier. In 1968, Rudolf won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which launched his international career. He went on to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also performed at major music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. Rudolf was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Antonín Dvořák, a fellow Czech composer. He recorded many of Dvořák's works, including the cello concerto, which is considered one of the greatest works for the cello. In addition to his performing career, Rudolf was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and later at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as cellists. Rudolf received many awards and honors throughout his career.
