Margaret Baker-Genovesi was born on May 12, 1975, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Baker-Genovesi showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later learned to play the violin and the viola. Baker-Genovesi attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1997 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the same institution. In 1999, Baker-Genovesi won the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a successful career in classical music. This grant helped her to establish herself as a rising star in the classical music world. Baker-Genovesi has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, such as Leonard Bernstein, Sir Simon Rattle, and Daniel Barenboim. One of Baker-Genovesi's most memorable performances was at the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway. She performed alongside other notable musicians, including Paul McCartney and Herbie Hancock, in front of an audience that included Nobel laureates and members of the Norwegian royal family. Baker-Genovesi is also an accomplished chamber musician and has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. She has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell. In addition to her performing career, Baker-Genovesi is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music. She is known for her ability to inspire and motivate her students, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in classical music. Baker-Genovesi has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In addition to the Avery Fisher Career Grant, she has been awarded the Naumburg Violin Award, the S&R Washington Award, and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. She was also named a MacArthur Fellow in 2005, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the United States and is often referred to as the "genius grant." Despite her many accomplishments, Baker-Genovesi remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and teach, and is widely regarded as one of the most talented and influential classical musicians of her generation.
