The ensemble was founded in 1972 by the United States Army Band, also known as "Pershing's Own," which is the premier musical organization of the United States Army. The quintet is composed of five talented musicians who are all members of the United States Army Band. The current members of the ensemble are Sergeant First Class Michael Mergen on trumpet, Staff Sergeant Christopher Sala on trumpet, Staff Sergeant Aaron Witek on French horn, Staff Sergeant David Earll on trombone, and Sergeant First Class Matthew Niess on tuba. The United States Army Brass Quintet has performed at numerous prestigious venues and events throughout the United States and around the world. Some of their most notable performances include playing for the inauguration of President Ronald Reagan in 1981, performing at the Kennedy Center Honors in 1994, and playing for the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. In addition to their impressive performance schedule, the United States Army Brass Quintet has also received numerous awards and accolades for their musical talent. They have won the National Brass Quintet Competition twice, in 1981 and 1985, and have been featured on several recordings, including "Brass Quintet Favorites" and "A Brass Menagerie."
