From a young age, Rowntree showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly developed a natural talent for the instrument. Rowntree's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the Royal Academy of Music in London when he was just ten years old. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers of the time, including John Lill and Peter Katin. Rowntree's dedication and hard work paid off, and he graduated from the academy with top honors. After completing his studies, Rowntree began performing in various concerts and recitals across the UK. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist, and his performances were highly acclaimed by both audiences and critics. In 1972, Rowntree won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition, which further cemented his position as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. He went on to release several more albums over the years, including recordings of works by Bach, Mozart, and Schubert. One of the highlights of Rowntree's career was his performance at the Proms in 1985.
