Wes10Brass is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2010 by ten brass musicians who were students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. The ensemble's founding members were Alex Dubovoy and Max Dietz on trumpet, Nick DiMaria and Ben Zucker on horn, Will Baker and Alex Wilf on trombone, and Matt Grubler, Ben Oppenheim, and Nick Otis on tuba. The ensemble's original name was "Wesleyan Brass Ensemble," but it was later changed to "Wes10Brass" to reflect the ten members of the group. Wes10Brass quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and engaging performances, which combined classical music with elements of jazz, pop, and world music. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as arrangements of popular songs by artists such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Radiohead. One of the highlights of Wes10Brass's early career was its performance at the 2011 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The ensemble was one of only a few collegiate brass ensembles to be invited to perform at the conference, which is one of the most prestigious events in the trumpet world. Wes10Brass's performance was well-received by the audience and critics alike, and it helped to establish the ensemble as a rising star in the world of classical music. In 2012, Wes10Brass released its debut album, "Wes10Brass," which featured a mix of classical and popular music. The album received positive reviews from critics, who praised the ensemble's technical skill and musicality. The album also helped to expand Wes10Brass's fan base beyond the Wesleyan University community. Over the years, Wes10Brass has performed at a variety of venues and events, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island, and the International Trombone Festival in Redlands, California. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of renowned musicians, including jazz pianist Vijay Iyer and composer and conductor John Adams. In 2016, Wes10Brass was awarded the prestigious Yale School of Music Alumni Prize, which recognizes outstanding achievement by a Yale School of Music graduate or ensemble. The prize was awarded to Wes10Brass in recognition of its "innovative programming, virtuosic performances, and commitment to education and community engagement." In addition to its performances, Wes10Brass is also committed to education and community outreach. The ensemble has conducted masterclasses and workshops at schools and universities across the United States, and it has also worked with organizations such as Music Haven, a New Haven-based nonprofit that provides music education to underserved children. Today, Wes10Brass continues to be one of the most innovative and exciting classical music ensembles in the United States. The ensemble's commitment to pushing the boundaries of classical music and engaging with audiences of all ages and backgrounds has earned it a devoted following and numerous accolades. With its blend of technical skill, musicality, and creativity, Wes10Brass is sure to continue making waves in the world of classical music for years to come.
