It was founded in 1948 as the Radio Éireann Symphony Orchestra, and was later renamed the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland in 1989. In 2020, it was rebranded as the Irish National Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra has had a number of principal conductors over the years, including Jean Martinon, Bryden Thomson, Alexander Anissimov, Gerhard Markson, and Alan Buribayev. The current principal conductor is Nathalie Stutzmann, who took up the position in 2018. The INSO has a core membership of around 80 musicians, and performs a wide range of classical music repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary. It has also commissioned and premiered a number of new works by Irish composers, including Gerald Barry, Donnacha Dennehy, and Jennifer Walshe. Over the years, the INSO has performed at a number of prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Salzburg Festival. It has also collaborated with a number of renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Maxim Vengerov, and Lang Lang. One of the highlights of the INSO's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin in 2003. The orchestra performed a specially commissioned piece by Irish composer Shaun Davey, which was broadcast to a global audience of millions. The INSO has also won a number of awards and accolades over the years. In 2018, it was named Orchestra of the Year at the Allianz Business to Arts Awards, in recognition of its commitment to promoting Irish music and culture. It has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for its recordings, including a nomination in 2019 for its recording of the music of Irish composer John Buckley. In recent years, the INSO has faced some financial challenges, with funding cuts and a decline in ticket sales.
