His father, a renowned conductor, and his mother, a pianist, were both passionate about music, and they encouraged their son to pursue his interest in the field. Badea began his musical training at the age of six, studying piano and violin. He showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. At the age of ten, he made his debut as a soloist with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major. This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career in music. Badea continued his musical education at the Bucharest Conservatory, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. He graduated with honors in all three disciplines and went on to pursue a career as a conductor. He made his debut as a conductor in 1978, leading the Romanian National Radio Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Badea's talent as a conductor was soon recognized, and he was invited to conduct orchestras around the world. In 1983, he was appointed the principal conductor of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for five years.
