Calabria McChesney was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. She was raised in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Calabria showed a natural talent for music and began taking piano lessons at the age of four. As she grew older, Calabria's love for music only intensified. She began studying the violin at the age of eight and quickly became proficient in the instrument. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Calabria attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under some of the most renowned violinists in the world. She graduated with honors in 2007 and immediately began performing professionally. One of Calabria's first major performances was at Carnegie Hall in 2008. She was the soloist for Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major, and her performance was met with critical acclaim. The New York Times called her "a rising star in the classical music world." In 2012, Calabria was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. The grant is given to young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise in their field. Calabria was the first violinist to receive the award in over a decade. In 2014, Calabria was invited to perform at the White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
