He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known violinist in the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Yakushenko showed an interest in music from a young age and began playing the piano at the age of five. Yakushenko's talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying at the Moscow Conservatory at the age of ten. He studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers in Russia, including Lev Naumov and Tatiana Zelikman. Yakushenko's dedication to his craft was evident from a young age, and he spent countless hours practicing and perfecting his technique. In 1983, Yakushenko won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, which is one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world. This win catapulted him to international fame, and he began performing in some of the most renowned concert halls around the world. Yakushenko's performances were known for their technical brilliance and emotional depth, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after pianists of his generation. Over the course of his career, Yakushenko performed with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
