Emil Dekov was born on May 22, 1958, in Sofia, Bulgaria. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Dekov showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Dekov's musical education began at the National School of Music in Sofia, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Lyudmil Angelov. He continued his studies at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Piano Performance. In 1982, Dekov won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy, which launched his international career. He went on to win numerous other awards, including the Grand Prix at the International Piano Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, and the Special Prize at the International Piano Competition in Porto, Portugal. Dekov's performances have taken him to some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Dekov's most memorable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1985, where he performed a program of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Prokofiev. The New York Times praised his "brilliant technique and musical sensitivity," and the performance was hailed as a triumph. Dekov is also a dedicated chamber musician and has collaborated with many of the world's leading instrumentalists and vocalists. He has performed with violinist Maxim Vengerov, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and soprano Renée Fleming, among others. In addition to his performing career, Dekov is also a respected teacher and has taught at the State Academy of Music in Sofia and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, Germany. He has also given masterclasses around the world, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of musicians. Throughout his career, Dekov has been recognized for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 2003, he was awarded the Order of Stara Planina, one of Bulgaria's highest honors, for his achievements in the arts. He has also been awarded the Medal of Honor from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture and the Medal of Honor from the City of Sofia. Today, Emil Dekov continues to perform and teach, inspiring audiences and students around the world with his passion for music. His dedication to his craft and his unwavering commitment to excellence have made him one of the most respected and admired classical musicians of his generation.
