He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Rasmussen showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the violin and the cello. Rasmussen's talent for music was evident from an early age, and he began performing in public at the age of ten. He went on to study music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he received his diploma in 1972. During his time at the academy, Rasmussen studied under some of Denmark's most renowned musicians, including violinist Henryk Szeryng and cellist Erling Bløndal Bengtsson. After completing his studies, Rasmussen began his career as a professional musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of Denmark's most talented cellists and was in high demand as a soloist and chamber musician. He performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Throughout his career, Rasmussen was known for his technical skill and his ability to bring emotion and depth to his performances. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms.
