In 1958, he made his debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Throughout his career, Firchow performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also collaborated with many famous conductors, such as Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Zubin Mehta. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Robert Schumann, and he recorded several of Schumann's piano works for Deutsche Grammophon.
