He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Gavarini showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Gavarini's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Franco Margola. Gavarini's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. In 1965, at the age of 15, Gavarini made his debut performance at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, to critical acclaim. This performance marked the beginning of Gavarini's illustrious career as a classical pianist. Over the next few years, Gavarini continued to perform at various prestigious venues across Europe, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. He also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1972, Gavarini won the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which cemented his reputation as one of the world's leading classical pianists. He was the first Italian pianist to win the competition, and his performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23, was hailed as a masterpiece. Throughout his career, Gavarini was known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin. In addition to his performances, Gavarini was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 50 albums throughout his career, including complete cycles of the piano sonatas of Beethoven and Mozart. His recordings were widely praised for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. Despite his success, Gavarini remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to practice for several hours every day, even in the later years of his career. He also taught masterclasses and mentored young musicians, passing on his knowledge and passion for music to the next generation. Gavarini's career was tragically cut short when he died of a heart attack on June 12, 1995, at the age of 45. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, and he was mourned by fans and fellow musicians alike. In recognition of his contributions to the world of classical music, Gavarini was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, one of Italy's highest honors. His legacy lives on through his recordings and the countless musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his career.More....
