The Symphony Orchestra of Croatian Radiotelevision, also known as the HRT Symphony Orchestra, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Zagreb, Croatia. The orchestra was founded in 1949 as part of the Croatian Radiotelevision, the national public broadcaster of Croatia. The HRT Symphony Orchestra has been led by many distinguished conductors over the years, including Milan Horvat, Lovro von Matačić, and Nikša Bareza. The current principal conductor is Enrico Dindo, an Italian cellist and conductor who has been with the orchestra since 2017. The orchestra has a core of around 80 musicians, with additional players brought in for larger works. The ensemble has a reputation for excellence in both classical and contemporary repertoire, and has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors. One of the highlights of the HRT Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1963 Zagreb International Festival, where it premiered the Symphony No. 3 by Croatian composer Boris Papandopulo. The work was well-received and helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as a champion of contemporary music. In 1971, the orchestra embarked on its first international tour, performing in Italy, Austria, and Germany. Since then, the ensemble has toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, and has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The HRT Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized with numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1999, the ensemble was awarded the Vladimir Nazor Award, one of the highest honors in Croatian culture, for its contributions to the country's musical heritage. The orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings, including a 2010 album of works by Croatian composer Bruno Bjelinski that was nominated for a Croatian Porin Award. In addition to its concert performances, the HRT Symphony Orchestra is also known for its work in film and television. The ensemble has recorded music for many Croatian films and television shows, as well as international productions such as the BBC's adaptation of War and Peace.
