He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Garbarino was exposed to music and began to show a natural talent for it. Garbarino began his formal music education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly progressed and showed a great interest in the instrument. At the age of ten, he began to study the violin, which would become his primary instrument. He continued to study both instruments throughout his childhood and teenage years. In 1968, Garbarino was accepted into the Conservatorio di Musica Niccolò Paganini in Genoa, where he studied under the renowned violinist Salvatore Accardo. During his time at the conservatory, Garbarino honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of classical music. He graduated with honors in 1972. After graduating from the conservatory, Garbarino began to perform professionally. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and passionate musician. In 1974, he won first prize at the International Violin Competition in Genoa, which launched his career as a soloist. Over the next few years, Garbarino performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States. He played with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Claudio Abbado, Herbert von Karajan, and Leonard Bernstein. Garbarino's performances were always highly praised by critics and audiences alike. He was known for his technical skill, musicality, and emotional depth. He had a particular affinity for the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and his interpretations of their music were considered some of the best in the world. In addition to his solo performances, Garbarino was also a dedicated chamber musician. He played in several ensembles throughout his career, including the Garbarino Quartet, which he founded in 1980. The quartet was known for its innovative interpretations of classical music and its commitment to promoting new works by contemporary composers. Garbarino's career was not without its challenges. In 1985, he suffered a serious injury to his left hand, which threatened to end his career. However, he underwent extensive rehabilitation and was able to return to performing within a year. He continued to play with the same passion and skill as before, and his injury only served to deepen his appreciation for music. Throughout his career, Garbarino received numerous awards and honors. In 1982, he was awarded the prestigious Italian music award, the Premio Abbiati. He was also a recipient of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an Italian citizen. Garbarino was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at several music schools throughout his career, including the Conservatorio di Musica Niccolò Paganini in Genoa and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. He was known for his patient and nurturing approach to teaching, and many of his students went on to have successful careers in music.
