He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. From a young age, Commellas showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study music at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona. Commellas' talent as a musician was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills as a pianist. He won his first major competition at the age of 16, when he was awarded first prize in the National Piano Competition in Spain. This was the beginning of a long and illustrious career in music. Commellas went on to perform in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He was known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. One of Commellas' most memorable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, which he performed with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1968. The performance was widely praised by critics and cemented Commellas' reputation as one of the greatest pianists of his time.
