Role:ComposerBirth:1890Death:1969Joan Massià was a Spanish composer born on January 22, 1890, in the town of Manacor, located on the island of Mallorca. He was the son of a shoemaker and grew up in a humble family. Despite his family's financial limitations, Massià showed an early interest in music and began studying piano at a young age. Massià's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became known in his hometown for his exceptional piano skills. He continued his musical education in Palma de Mallorca, where he studied with the renowned composer and pianist Joan Lamote de Grignon. Under de Grignon's tutelage, Massià developed his compositional skills and began to write his own music. In 1910, Massià moved to Barcelona to further his musical education. He enrolled in the Conservatori del Liceu, where he studied composition with the composer and conductor Felip Pedrell. Pedrell was a significant influence on Massià's musical style, and he introduced him to the traditional music of Catalonia and other regions of Spain. Massià was particularly interested in the folk music of his native Mallorca, and he incorporated elements of this music into his compositions. Massià's early works were heavily influenced by the Romantic style of the late 19th century. However, as he continued to develop his compositional skills, he began to experiment with new musical forms and techniques. He was particularly interested in the music of the French Impressionists, and he incorporated elements of this style into his own music. In 1914, Massià won the prestigious Premi de la Diputació de Barcelona for his composition "La nit de Nadal" (Christmas Night). This award brought him national recognition and helped to establish him as one of the leading composers of his generation. During the 1920s and 1930s, Massià continued to compose prolifically. He wrote music for a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and choral music. He also wrote music for the theater and collaborated with several prominent playwrights and directors. One of Massià's most significant works is his "Sinfonia mallorquina" (Mallorcan Symphony), which he composed in 1927. This work is a tribute to his native Mallorca and incorporates elements of the island's traditional music. The symphony is divided into four movements, each of which represents a different aspect of Mallorcan life and culture. The work was well-received by audiences and critics alike and helped to establish Massià as one of the leading composers of his generation. Massià's music was not without controversy, however. In the 1930s, he became involved in the political turmoil that was sweeping across Spain. He was a supporter of the Republican government and wrote several works that were critical of the fascist regime of General Francisco Franco. As a result, he was forced to flee Spain in 1939 and spent the rest of his life in exile. Despite the challenges he faced, Massià continued to compose throughout his life. He wrote music for a variety of genres, including film scores and ballets. He also continued to experiment with new musical forms and techniques, incorporating elements of jazz and other popular music into his compositions. Massià died on December 17, 1969, in Paris, France. He left behind a significant body of work that continues to be performed and admired today.More....
