The Shevchenko Opera & Ballet Theatre Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Kiev, Ukraine. The orchestra was founded in 1867 as part of the Kiev Opera and Ballet Theatre, which was named after the famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. The theatre was established by a group of Ukrainian intellectuals who wanted to promote Ukrainian culture and language through the arts. The Shevchenko Opera & Ballet Theatre Orchestra has a long and rich history, having performed with some of the most renowned conductors and soloists in the world. The concertmaster of the orchestra is Oleksandr Korniev, who has been with the orchestra since 2001. Korniev is a graduate of the Kiev Conservatory and has performed as a soloist with many orchestras in Ukraine and abroad. The orchestra's principal players include Oleksandr Kryvenko (flute), Oleksandr Kovalenko (oboe), Serhiy Kryvoruchko (clarinet), Oleksandr Kryvopustov (bassoon), Oleksandr Kryvopustov (horn), and Oleksandr Kryvopustov (trumpet). These musicians are all highly skilled and have performed with many orchestras and ensembles in Ukraine and abroad. The Shevchenko Opera & Ballet Theatre Orchestra has performed many notable works over the years, including operas, ballets, and symphonies. Some of the orchestra's most memorable performances include the premiere of the opera "Moses" by Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko in 1888, the premiere of the ballet "Swan Lake" by Pyotr Tchaikovsky in 1895, and the premiere of the opera "Taras Bulba" by Mykola Lysenko in 1918. The orchestra has also performed with many renowned soloists, including pianist Sviatoslav Richter, violinist David Oistrakh, and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. These performances have been highly acclaimed and have helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as one of the finest in Ukraine. In addition to its performances, the Shevchenko Opera & Ballet Theatre Orchestra has also been recognized for its outstanding contributions to the arts. The orchestra has won numerous awards and accolades, including the Order of Merit of Ukraine in 2007 and the Golden Diploma at the International Festival of Symphonic Music in 2010.
