Role:EnsembleThe Frost Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Miami, Florida. It was founded in 2003 as part of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. The ensemble is made up of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members and guest artists. The Frost Symphony Orchestra was founded by Thomas Sleeper, who served as its first conductor. Sleeper was a professor of music at the Frost School of Music and had previously conducted the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. Under Sleeper's leadership, the Frost Symphony Orchestra quickly established itself as one of the premier orchestras in the region. In 2005, the Frost Symphony Orchestra performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as part of the National Symphony Orchestra's National Conducting Institute. The ensemble received critical acclaim for its performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, and Sleeper was praised for his "impressive control and musicality." In 2007, the Frost Symphony Orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. The ensemble was one of only two university orchestras invited to participate in the program, which brought together young musicians from across the country for a summer of intensive training and performance. The Frost Symphony Orchestra performed works by Bernstein, Copland, and Gershwin, and received a standing ovation from the audience. In 2011, the Frost Symphony Orchestra performed at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami as part of the Miami Made Festival. The ensemble premiered a new work by composer Carlos Rafael Rivera, titled "Symphony No. 1: Laudes." The piece was inspired by the poetry of Pablo Neruda and received critical acclaim for its "lush harmonies and evocative melodies." In 2013, the Frost Symphony Orchestra performed at the New World Center in Miami Beach as part of the New World Symphony's Side-by-Side program. The program brought together members of the Frost Symphony Orchestra and the New World Symphony for a joint performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 1. The performance was conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, the artistic director of the New World Symphony, and received rave reviews from critics. In addition to its major performances, the Frost Symphony Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 2009, the ensemble was named the winner of the American Prize in Orchestral Performance, a national competition that recognizes excellence in the field of orchestral music. The Frost Symphony Orchestra was praised for its "impressive technical skill and musicality." The Frost Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to contemporary music. In 2015, the ensemble was awarded a grant from the Knight Foundation to commission new works by emerging composers. The resulting pieces were premiered by the Frost Symphony Orchestra in a series of concerts at the New World Center. Today, the Frost Symphony Orchestra continues to be one of the leading orchestras in the region. The ensemble is currently led by Gerard Schwarz, a renowned conductor and former music director of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Under Schwarz's leadership, the Frost Symphony Orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of classical music and inspire audiences with its innovative programming and virtuosic performances.More....
