Henry Kiichli was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1925, in Zurich, Switzerland. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged their children to pursue music. Kiichli began playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from an early age. He received his first formal training at the Zurich Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and composer, Edwin Fischer. Fischer recognized Kiichli's talent and took him under his wing, providing him with intensive training and guidance. Kiichli's talent continued to flourish, and he made his debut performance at the age of 12, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Kiichli received critical acclaim for his exceptional talent and skill. Kiichli continued to study under Fischer and went on to attend the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Rosina Lhévinne. He also studied with other renowned pianists, including Vladimir Horowitz and Artur Rubinstein. Throughout his career, Kiichli performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, playing with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He was known for his exceptional technique and his ability to bring out the emotional depth and beauty of the music he played. One of Kiichli's most notable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, also known as the "Emperor" concerto. He performed this piece with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan, and the performance was recorded and released on CD. The recording received critical acclaim and is considered one of the definitive recordings of this piece. Kiichli also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1950, he won the Geneva International Music Competition, which helped to launch his international career. He was also awarded the Prix de Lausanne in 1951 and the Geneva International Music Competition in 1952. In addition to his performing career, Kiichli was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Zurich Conservatory and the Juilliard School, and his students included some of the most talented young pianists of his generation. Kiichli continued to perform and teach well into his later years, and he remained an active and influential figure in the world of classical music until his death on January 1, 2010, at the age of 84. His legacy lives on through his recordings, his students, and the countless people who were inspired by his exceptional talent and dedication to the art of classical music.
