Neil Howlett was a renowned British bass-baritone opera singer and a respected voice teacher. He was born on 26th June 1947 in London, England. Howlett was the son of a professional singer and a music teacher, and he grew up in a musical family. His father, George Howlett, was a well-known baritone singer, and his mother, Marjorie Howlett, was a music teacher. Howlett's musical journey began at an early age. He started singing in the choir of St. Paul's Cathedral in London when he was just seven years old. He continued to sing in the choir until he was 13 years old. During this time, he received vocal training from the choir's director, Dr. John Dykes Bower. Howlett's talent was evident from an early age, and he was soon selected to sing solo parts in the choir. After leaving St. Paul's Cathedral choir, Howlett continued his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He studied voice under the tutelage of Hervey Alan, a renowned British baritone singer. Howlett's talent and hard work paid off, and he graduated from the academy with a diploma in voice in 1969. Howlett's professional career as an opera singer began in 1970 when he joined the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. He made his debut as the Speaker in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Howlett's performance was well-received, and he soon became a regular performer at the festival. He went on to perform in several productions at Glyndebourne, including "Don Giovanni," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "The Barber of Seville." In 1972, Howlett made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London. He performed the role of Colline in Puccini's "La Bohème." Howlett's performance was praised by critics, and he soon became a regular performer at the Royal Opera House. He went on to perform in several productions at the opera house, including "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," and "The Magic Flute." Howlett's international career took off in the 1980s. He performed in several productions at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, including "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," and "The Magic Flute." He also performed at the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Bavarian State Opera. One of Howlett's most memorable performances was his portrayal of Wotan in Wagner's "Ring Cycle." He performed the role at the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. Howlett's performance was praised for its power and depth, and it cemented his reputation as one of the world's leading bass-baritone opera singers. In addition to his successful career as an opera singer, Howlett was also a respected voice teacher. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as opera singers, including Bryn Terfel and Simon Keenlyside. Howlett's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with several awards and honors. In 1989, he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to music. He was also awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Singer Award in 1991. Howlett's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1993. He was just 46 years old. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but his legacy lives on through his recordings and the many singers he taught.
