Peter McGillivray is a Canadian baritone who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1975, McGillivray grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He attended the University of Manitoba, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance. After completing his undergraduate studies, McGillivray moved to Toronto to pursue a career in opera. He continued his vocal training at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Master of Music degree in opera performance. During this time, he also participated in several young artist programs, including the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio and the Santa Fe Opera's Apprentice Program. McGillivray's career began to take off in the early 2000s, when he started to receive critical acclaim for his performances. In 2002, he made his debut with the Canadian Opera Company in the role of Schaunard in Puccini's La bohème. He went on to perform with the company in several other productions, including Mozart's Don Giovanni and Verdi's Falstaff. In 2004, McGillivray made his debut with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, singing the role of the Second Nazarene in Richard Strauss's Salome. He has since returned to the Met to perform in several other productions, including Verdi's Rigoletto and Mozart's The Magic Flute. McGillivray has also performed with many other opera companies around the world, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He has sung a wide range of roles, from Mozart's Figaro to Wagner's Wotan. In addition to his work in opera, McGillivray is also a sought-after concert performer. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, James Levine, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. McGillivray has received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 2005, he was named a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, one of the most prestigious competitions for young opera singers in the world. He has also been a recipient of the George London Foundation Award and the Richard Tucker Career Grant. In addition to his performing career, McGillivray is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught at several universities and conservatories, including the University of Toronto and the Glenn Gould School. He is also a frequent guest lecturer and masterclass teacher at schools and festivals around the world.
