Born in Seoul, South Korea, on August 22, 1969, Lisa Kim grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Lisa showed a keen interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Lisa's family moved to the United States when she was six years old, and she continued her music education in New York City. She attended the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where she studied with Dorothy DeLay, one of the most renowned violin teachers of the 20th century. Lisa's talent and dedication to her craft were evident from an early age, and she quickly became one of DeLay's star pupils. After completing her studies at Juilliard, Lisa went on to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with Jaime Laredo. She graduated from Curtis in 1991 with a Bachelor of Music degree. Lisa's career as a professional musician began shortly after she graduated from Curtis. She joined the Houston Symphony Orchestra as a first violinist in 1991 and quickly rose through the ranks to become the orchestra's concertmaster in 1996. Lisa's tenure as concertmaster of the Houston Symphony was marked by numerous highlights, including performances with some of the world's most renowned conductors, such as Christoph Eschenbach, Hans Graf, and Robert Spano. In addition to her work with the Houston Symphony, Lisa has also performed as a soloist with numerous other orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic. She has also been a guest concertmaster with several other orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the National Symphony Orchestra. Lisa's talent and dedication to her craft have been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1993, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, one of the most prestigious awards for young musicians in the United States. She was also a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant in 1995. In addition to her work as a performer, Lisa is also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She has served on the faculty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University since 2002 and has also taught at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. Lisa's dedication to her craft and her commitment to excellence have made her one of the most respected and admired musicians of her generation.
