His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Gillblad started playing the piano when he was just five years old, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Gillblad's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the Royal College of Music in Stockholm when he was just seven years old. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers in Sweden, including Gunnar Hallhagen and Gunnar Johansson. Gillblad's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly became one of the most promising young musicians in the country. In 1963, Gillblad graduated from the Royal College of Music with top honors. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the legendary pianist Rosina Lhévinne. Gillblad's time at Juilliard was a formative experience for him, and he credited Lhévinne with helping him develop his unique style and approach to music. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Gillblad embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and innovative pianists of his generation. Gillblad's performances were known for their technical precision, emotional depth, and musicality. He was equally at home playing the works of classical composers like Beethoven and Mozart as he was playing contemporary pieces by composers like Philip Glass and John Adams. Throughout his career, Gillblad performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned orchestras and conductors of his time, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He was praised for his technical skill, his musicality, and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. In 1972, he won the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which cemented his reputation as one of the world's greatest pianists. In addition to his successful career as a concert pianist, Gillblad was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm for many years, and he was known for his ability to inspire and motivate his students. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, and they credited Gillblad with helping them develop their own unique styles and approaches to music. His death was a great loss to the world of music, but his legacy lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired and taught throughout his career.
